The Blue River originates in Johnson County, Kansas and winds through the southern portion of Kansas City, Missouri draining over 200 square miles. The Blue eventually flows into the Missouri River. Portions of the project area experience flooding several times a year, blocking access to facilities and causing property damage.

Authorized in the 1970 Flood Control Act, the Blue River Channel construction began in 1983, originally scheduled for completion in 1998. The project is located west of I-435 along the Blue River from its mouth at the Missouri River upstream to 63rd Street.  It runs through a long-standing industrial and manufacturing district with 4,100 businesses that employ over 66,000 people as well as residential neighborhoods.

Twelve (12) miles of channel modification, realignment to eliminate severe bends, channel deepening and widening, and other engineered systems are designed to reduce the 100 year flood levels by 6 to 8 feet.

Progress updates are presented in a blog format below with most recent postings at the top.

Revised floodplain maps became effective May 4, 2006 for the channel from the Missouri River to Stadium drive. A value Engineering study was performed in April 2007 to identify possible cost savings for the next phase of the work and to incorporate green solutions to the project. The Lower Blue Parkway Bridge has been demolished and the new bridge, currently under design, is scheduled for replacement in 2009. The upper Blue Parkway Bridge is currently under construction. Completion for the Blue River Channel Project may be achieved if adequate federal funding is provided.
