The Upper Turkey Creek basin is centrally located in a metropolitan region that is embarking on several local, regional or bi-state planning initiatives focused on water or other natural resource issues. The basin and creek habitat are significantly degraded from development activity, and water quality is a serious problem.
Severe flooding occurred in the Turkey Creek Basin in 1977, 1993 and 1998. The October 1998 flood caused over $12 million in flood damages in the City of Merriam alone and threatened lives in several areas of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. Interstate 35 was flooded over and an estimated 20-30 persons escaped the flood surge that hit their cars with only seconds to spare. Had the event occurred at a more congested time period than a Sunday night, there would likely have been fatalities.
