The Upper Turkey Creek basin is centrally located in a metropolitan region that is embarking on several local, regional or bi-state planning initiatives focused on water or other natural resource issues. The basin and creek habitat are significantly degraded from development activity, and water quality is a serious problem.

Severe flooding occurred in the Turkey Creek Basin in 1977, 1993 and 1998.  The October 1998 flood caused over $12 million in flood damages in the City of Merriam alone and threatened lives in several areas of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. Interstate 35 was flooded over and an estimated 20-30 persons escaped the flood surge that hit their cars with only seconds to spare.  Had the event occurred at a more congested time period than a Sunday night, there would likely have been fatalities.

Progress updates are presented in a blog format below with most recent postings at the top.

The Turkey Creek channel through the upper segment of the fully urbanized basin is about 15 miles long.  The study is identifying opportunities for Federal participation in structural and/or nonstructural flood damages reduction and for ecosystem in the basin.
